The second day of action of the PWA Sylt World Cup saw great conditions. 20-30knots of wind and big, powerful, hollow waves hit the shores of Sylt. The single elimination of the men’s wave was completed and Philip Köster claimed victory in front of Victor Fernandez, Ricardo Campello and Alex Mussolini.

Hi,
I really dont know how someone love this conditions. The guys are doing great in this washing machine. My compliment. But I prefer real waves and warmer conditions. Now, just Sept-Oct and they have to use heavy wet-suit already. I preferably see them in nicer conditions because they can do MUCH better. Still, they do a good job.
Koester looks pretty much unbeatable, he is and will remain the boss for a long, long time.
Is the freestyle competition in the same place as the wave?
If so.. how are the two different? Surely double forwards and backloops would also count in a freestyle hit… and I would not say that in these conditions wave surfing is at its best?
I may be wrong though… I just see a lot of overlap with onshore conditions
It’s not at it’s best? Just because of the conditions – far from perfect , the level WAS AT IT’S BEST. Just If you watched the heats you could see pretty much everything except pure down the line wave riding (Pwa dosent have it at all) and pushforward loop. Everything else like 1 footed one handed back , forward, 2x forward , air chcachoos , some sick wave 360 , takas. It wat realy nice to watch wave comp. back again after 2 years of brak in Sylt.
Haha I know that the level was at its best, that’s not what I was saying. By conditions not at their best I meant more that if you were to compare what people consider perfect freestyle conditions and perfect wave conditions Sylt seems to sit perfectly in the middle. Having said that in some cases I prefer these conditions because they are usually the hardest to do moves in and u can really see how good these guys are.. But ok if freestyle and wave are done in the same area, that’s ok with me. I just wasn’t sure 🙂… Read more »
Yes, Slalom, Freestyle and Wave are in the same place.
Yesterday we saw a lot of great heats and the conditions were really good (for Sylt conditions ;-)) during some of the heats. Unfortunately the conditions in the finals were not as good as during the semifinal heats, because the waves dropped.
well haven’t seen much waveriding in the freestyle competition at all. And don’t really know if the spinning freestyle moves could be so well done with quad fin wave boards.
And looking at freestyle and wave heats now in Sylt for me the difference is quite big. The only overlapping are some of the jumps.
What makes pwa-wavesailing now much better to watch is the live scoring system. It makes it much more viewer friendly than the freestyle. They really have to develop a live scoring system for freestyle for next season.
Nice wave 360s!
