Today was the second day of the PWA Wave Worldcup at Pozo Izquierdo on Gran Canaria. With a worse wave-and wind forecast than the day before, our expectations to see outstanding action on day 2 weren´t really high, but still we saw some great moves and the conditions allowed to finish 5 out of 7 heats in the ladies single elimination and a junior competition.
We asked the head judge Duncan Coombs again to resume day 2 for us. Sorry, for the audio quality, it was a bit noisy in the tent because of the wind.
With lighter winds than yesterday head judge Duncan Coombs made the decision to run the women’s single elimination. At 10.30 the first heat got started, but got cancelled as the conditions were not suitable. After a break of about 30 minutes the heat got re-sailed and the heat duration extended from 12 to 14 minutes. During the next heats, the conditions got better and 5 heats got finished.
Olya Raskina, Eva Oude Ophuis, Alice Arutkin and Steffi Wahl qualified for the top 8. Raskina faced Karin Jaggi, who dominated the heat. Unfortunately Raskina crashed during her heat in one of the biggest sets of the day, broke her mast and got washed onto the beach of Pozo.

Iballa Ruano Moreno stopped talented Dutch Ophuis. “I had a hard time to find any ramps”, Eva Oude told us. Laure Treboux sailed a very nice heat, landing a Forward, a Shove-It, a Backside Air and kicked the French lady Alice Arutkin out of the single. Steffi Wahl from Northern Germany had the hardest opponent of all in her quarterfinal, local Daida Ruano Moreno. Daida landed massive jumps and a wave 360ty. No chance for Steffi.

SEMIFINAL
Heat 23, the semifinal of the ladies was started at 12:38. Karin Jaggi and Iballa Moreno had a tough battle, but in the end the local Iballa claimed victory. The Swiss Jaggi impressed with a good wave selection and long waverides, but Iballa scored enough points in the jump category and qualified for the winners final of the single elimination.
In the second duel Daida Moreno faced Laure Treboux. Daida impressed with a big stalled Forward and excellent waverides. The conditions were not easy, as the wind suddenly picked up massively during the 14 minutes long heat. Afterwards Laure Treboux told us, that she felt really overpowered. After the semifinal the conditions got worse, due to the rising tide and the race director decided to wait for better conditions for the final.

JUNIOR COMPETITION

In the late afternoon a junior competition got started. The contest saw eight young talents below the age of 18 hit the water for two twelve minute heats, in which the biggest move would see the top two sailors advance into the final. The youngest participants were 11 years-old and used 2,5m sails in 35 knots of wind. The 17 year old Gran Canaria local Alessio Stillrich dominated the competition with perfectly landed tweaked Pushloops and Backside 360s. Moritz Mauch, who grew up on Gran Canaria – his father runs a windsurfing center in Bahia Feliz – impressed with solid wave riding sliding through a perfect Taka. Pablo “Pablito” Ramirez, a local from Gran Canaria as well, finished in third place and the French Arthur Arutkin in 4th.
