Praia do Maceiò, a relatively unknown Brazilian freestyle spot, located around 10 kilometers west of Camocim, saw the first ever international freestyle event for women and men on November 28 and 29. Like every year, several top freestylers spend their winter months in Brazil like Davy Scheffers, Julien Mas, Adrian Beholz, local Hugo de Sousa, Arrianne Aukes, Giovanni Passani, Jazzy Zwerus, etc. It was a good test for the pros to make a first test their level and to test Julien Mas’s live scoring system again.

30 knots of wind and 1 m high ramps were the perfect ingredients for a freestyle competition. The conditions were like in a windsurfing fun park and allowed everyone to go for big freestyle moves with a lot of airtime.

Julien Mas, competitor and brain behind the live scoring system, told us about the event: “We started with a mixed Dingle Elimination in which girls and boys were mixed up. Some very well known names from PWA and EFPT  events like Davy Scheffers, Adi Beholz, Mattia Fabrizi or for the girls Dutch Arrianne Aukes took part in the King ofMaceiò! It seemed to me that everybody was enjoying to compete in windy conditions and to have an extra training during the European winter time! Also some locals with impressive talent had the chance to take part in a competition, showing big moves as Burners and Air Skopus!”

Julien Mas: “We used the Live Scoring System to judge during the Dingle Elimination, alternating the riders on the beach as judges. Even if our internet connection was really slow, we were happy to see that it was possible to use the system: every judge was entering the scores directly, and the system was able to keep them, even if the results showed up with 5 – 10 minutes of delay (due to the connection). Every result was clear for everybody and no one complained about the live score results! One heat was particularly interesting: Giovanni Passani won against Loick Spicher with just 0,01 points difference! That’s incredibly close, but clear! If the score would have been the same for both riders, the one having the best scored move would have won! Giovanni Passani, who is still a young gun of the PWA tour, had a really nice surprising result reaching the 2nd place at Maceiò!

The super session wasn’t judged with the Live Score System. We had 11 people on the water and saw massive moves like the Shakas from Arrianne Aukes and a Shifty from Davy Scheffers. It was a nice event, full of positive vibes! Danny Kater and I found out how to work on the evolution of the Live Score System to make it work even without internet connection! Thank you to everybody, who helped with the organization, and special thanks to KiteZen, who offered amazing buffets on Saturday and Sunday night! The conditions were just perfect!”
