Phil Soltysiak (Can 9, Starboard/ Sailworks/ Da Kine) reports from the 2010 Carbarete Classic.

The wind kicked in this afternoon for Day 1 of the Cabarete Classic. The organizers first started off with some Slalom heats for the mini-juniors and followed up with a few races for the Open and Sport fleets.

Slalom action on day 1 at Carbarete.

In the open fleet my first race went allright. I started in 4th place and managed to pass on the first jibe mark to get into 3rd. The last 4 reaches I just couldn’t catch Constantino Saragosa from Bonaire to move up another spot. Diego Domenianni from the United States had the lead for the whole race and is currently in the lead after 5 races.
After race 1 was waterstarting and forgot I had a slalom fin on and not a tiny freestyle one. That cost me the day and the next 4 races as I spent my time getting my foot stitched.

There were lots of really young racers in the mini-juniors, junior, pro-kids, and sport slalom categories. Taking the lead in each category were Rabel J. Vasquez from Cabarete, JP Van Der Wolde from Aruba, Stephen Max from Aruba and local upcoming racer Antonio Chevalier respectively.
Tomorrow we plan to do some more racing. I should be able to tape up my foot well and compete again. I am hoping we will have enough races so I can discard a few of my missed ones in order to still finish in the top 3. The wind forecast is looking promising so we’ll see what happens.
