Sarah-Quita Offringa, who recently won the Wave World Cup in Tenerife, started to prepare for eh this year’s wave season quite early. She decided to travel to Jericoacoara, Brazil, where she practiced in starboard tack conditions. Perhaps not the best idea many people will guess as many World Cup tour stops offer mainly port tack conditions (Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Chile, Margaret River). But a few others like Maui or eventually Sylt – it’s tricky anywhere there – offer starboard tack conditions. And Maui will host the all deciding final. And the little fun fact is that the Aruban prefers starboard tack over port tack for riding and jumping. It feels more natural to her and she learnt the back loop and push loop in this wind direction.
I prefer starboard tack conditions for riding and I actually learnt my first push loops and back loops on that tack, but over the years I have not sailed that tack as much which results in me having to re-learn the jumping ever year. Riding feels more intuitive and comfortable but I was testing different fins and positions so in this clip there is some terrible jumping with some improvement towards the end, some okay turns and also some bad ones and a couple of highlight hits.
