Today was the final day of the 2012 PWA Slalom on Fuerteventura. In the morning everything looked as though we could see three more rounds of Slalom, but the wind was very patchy from the beginning on. Although the conditions were not really constant for racing, three heats got finished, before the wind dropped totally. The wind did not return, so the 5th round was not completed and the result remained the same: 1st Maynard, 2nd van der Steen and 3rd Albeau.
Finian Maynard from the British Virgin Islands, who, so far did not finish an event in the top 20 this year, won the 27th edition of the Fuerteventura Worldcup. For him, it was enough to have one great day of sailing with two victories and one third place. He definitely was the fastest over the course area and impressed with speed and clean jibes. As he is the heaviest sailor on tour he sometimes struggled to plan through his jibes in the past. This time the wind strength was perfect. 25 knots and more were enough to accelerate out of each jibe. Well done Finian!
Ben van der Steen followed on his heels. He was the only sailor, who made it into all 4 winner finals but in the end he was 3,3 points behind Finian and 2,0 points ahead of Antoine Albeau, who definitely was not too happy with his third place: “I had better days already!”
Björn Dunkerbeck finished in 4th, took the lead in the overall ranking and is on his way to another world title. His hardest opponents are Antoine Albeau, Julien Quentel, Micah Buzianis and Ben van der Steen.
