After 3 long years the wait is over and the most radical windsurfers in the world are competing in Pozo Izquierdo as the Gran Canaria PWA World Cup finally returns between the 9th-17th July. 18 women and 48 men have registered for the competition. In the youth category 29 boys and 8 girls will show their best in the tough conditions of Pozo Izquierdo.

Day 1 | 9.7.2022: On the first day of the event the conditions never were consistent enough to compete, so it was a day of chatting and waiting for the conditions. Unfortunately there is a heatwave in Gran Canaria right now, which always destroys the normal trade winds.

Day 2 | 10.7.2022: On the second day the conditions were a bit better compared to the first day and the youth competition got started with the U15 boys and U17 girls at 11:35 (Canary Time Zone). After a break because of too light wind the junior competition recommenced at 15:00 for 1,5 hours until about 16:30.

Day 3 | 11.7.2022: On day 3 the conditions got a bit better. At 10:00 the junior competition got resumed until 11:00 (Canary Time Zone). Afterwards 3 heats of the men’s single elimination got completed before the conditions got worse again. At 14:30 the women’s single elimination kicked off. 6 heats got completed in unusual Pozo Izquierdo conditions.

Day 4 | 12.7.2022: Day 4 saw the completion of the Women’s Single Elimination in small waves and winds ranging between 20-30+ knots. The conditions were much better than on the first three days. Iballa Ruano Moreno won with the highest scoring heat of the whole single elimination with 20,12 points in front of her twin sister Daida, who collected 14,88 points. And Iballa defeated Daida in Pozo for only the second time in her career since 1998. After a break the men’s single elimination got resumed until the tide dropped.

Day 5 | 13.7.2022: No competition on day 5. The wind was never suitable for any competition.

Day 6 | 14.7.2022:  After a day of waiting for the conditions the men resumed their double elimination with heat 11 at 10:30. Thomas Traversa, Marcilio Browne, Philip Köster and Marc Pare are the first four riders, who qualified for the top 8 in the single elimination. Fingers crossed for good conditions during the remaining three event days.

Day 7 | 15.7.2022: In the morning the boy’s U20s competition started at 10:45am. In 12 minutes heats the riders demonstrated their best 2 jumps and 1 wave ride. Liam Dunkerbeck won the U20 Boy’s Final in front of Titouan Flechet and Hakata Ishii. Liam produced a brilliant display of moves to claim a comprehensive victory as he landed a textbook one-foot Back loop and a Double forward, whilst he was able to link together a 6.5 point wave to claim the top spot. After the boys U20 final the men’s single elimination got resumed with 18 minute heats and the best 2 waves and 2 jumps to count. The single elimination couldn’t be finished though due to the dropping waves after high tide.  Philip Köster and Victor Fernandez will battle for the 1st place and Thomas Traversa & Ricardo Campello will battle for the 3rd place.

Day 8 | 16.7.2022: The penultimate day of the 2022 Gran Canaria PWA Windsurfing World Cup saw the conclusion of the Men’s Single Elimination in tricky conditions. At 12:47 the final started with 16 minute heats and the 2 best waves and 2 best jumps counting. Köster produced an almost perfect jumping display scoring 18.13 points out of possible 20. Fernandez earned the highest wave score of the final – 6.75 points but it was not enough to win. In total Philip Köster won the single elimination with 28,01 points ahead of Victor Fernandez, who scored 23,25 points. The battle for place 3 was won by Ricardo Campello with 26,25 points ahead of Thomas Traversa who scored 20,26 points.

Day 9 | 17.7.2022: The final day of the event saw an epic end with the Double Elimination being completed for the Men’s and Women’s fleets. A huge congratulations to Daida Moreno & Philip Köster for their respective event victories and also to Iballa Moreno, Sarah-Quita Offrringa, Marcilio Browne and Victor Fernandez, who complete the podium positions.
