Tom Deburchgrave published a video from Platboom, South Africa with finest wave riding conditions and unusual starboard tack wind. It’s the southernmost spot in the Good Hope Nature Reserve in the Cape region.
It was am fun day in Platboom, Cape Town with nice wind and waves. I filmed Niccolò Violati, Andrea Franchini and Adele Frola in January 2019 and that’s the edit Platboom Paradise from the nice session. Tom Deburchgrave
In a few weeks the high windy season will be in full swing and a lot of windsurfs will escape the cold winter on the northern hemisphere. The region around Cape Town has a lot to offer for wave windsurfing enthusiasts.

“…unusual starboard tack wind.” Wasn’t every ride in this video was on port…?
No.Standing on the shore, facing the sea: Wind from the left side means porttack sailing.
Right foot back = Starboard tack riding
Very weird. That is the exact opposite of how port and starboard tack are conventionally defined.
…tack is the alignment of the wind with respect to a sailing craft under way. If the wind is from starboard side of the sailing craft, it is on starboard tack, and if from port, on port tack.
So, if you are on port tack while riding a wave, you are actually “starboard tack riding” and vice versa?
Well, going out its exactly the same. Imagen yourself being a sailboat heading out.
…tack is the alignment of the wind with respect to a sailing craft under way. If the wind is from starboard side (right= a.e hookipa*) of the sailing craft, it is on starboard tack, and if from port, on port tack (left =pozo)
So its gotta be defined by the way youre looking at the sea, heading out. The actual waveride in hookipa is on porttack, i agree…
Well that is super odd. Wonder how that backwards terminology came to be.
Sorry, but If I’m riding a wave while on port tack, I’m calling that a port tack ride.
