German freestyler Quirin Kraus and his friends Andres Ramsauer, Gabriel Heider, Christian & Stefan Lasser travelled to Oman this summer. They spent a few weeks on windy Masirah Island and released a video called “Oman statt Daham”, which is German and means “Oman instead of home”. In German it’s a rhyme. Oman has a great wind statistics for the months May till September. The days are warm, but the non stop blowing south westerly wind during the summer months guarantees comfortable temperatures. It can get a bit chilly during the night. The conditions look great and the boys had way more windsurfing days compared to what they would have had spending their summer in Germany or Austria. We caught up with Quirin for a few questions.

Continentseven: When and how long were you in Oman? How were the conditions?
Quirin Kraus: We were there for almost four weeks in July. There was not a day without wind and the conditions were versatile. There are many different spots for freestyle with different wind conditions and thermal effects. You have to study meteorology to understand when or where you should go for a windsurfing session. The water surface ranges from small chop to quite large chop. But there is also a spot where it is very smooth and you have a small wave from the front. That was so much fun there.
Continentseven: Masirah Island is more known as a wave spot?
Quirin Kraus: Yes, there are really great wave spots with wind from the right. We definitely would travel there again, as the wind conditions have convinced us absolutely. In addition, the locals are extremely friendly and we felt very welcome. We got to know a turtle counter quite quickly there, who provided us with his house at a reasonable price.
Continentseven: Did you have strange experiences?
Quirin Kraus: We have not experienced anything very special. I think it’s normal that tourists often get stuck in the sand or have to deal with cockroaches. It was a funny situation when our fellow traveler Andi had to do his business in the desert. We were on the beach and just wanted to windsurf as he drove our SUV through a flood area and he got completely stuck. We knotted a big rope out of many single old fishing ropes and somehow managed to pull out the car.
Continentseven: Wann und wie lange wart ihr im Oman? Wie waren die Conditions?
Quirin Kraus: Wir waren knapp vier Wochen im Juli dort. Es gab nicht einen Tag ohne Wind, die Bedingungen waren vielseitig. Zum Freestylen gibt es verschiedene Spots mit verschieden starken Wind. Der Wind wird dort teilweise lokal extrem verstärkt, sodass man fast Meteorologie studieren muss um zu verstehen wann man wo windsurfen sollte oder kann. Die Wasseroberfläche reicht von kleinem Chop bis hin zu recht großem sortierten Chop. Es gibt aber auch einen Spot wo es sehr glatt wird und man eine kleine Welle von vorne hat. Das war sehr spaßig dort.
Continentseven: Masirah Island war bist jetzt eher als Wave Revier bekannt?
Quirin Kraus: Ja, es gibt dort wirklich tolle Wellenspots mit Wind von rechts. Wir würden dort aber auf jeden Fall wieder hin fahren. Die Windausbeute hat uns voll und ganz überzeugt. Zudem ist die Bevölkerung dort extrem freundlich und war uns gegenüber sehr aufgeschlossen. Wir haben dort recht schnell einen Schildkrötenzähler kennengelernt, der uns sein Haus recht günstig zur Verfügung gestellt hat.
Continentseven: Habt ihr irgendetwas Spezielles erlebt?
Quirin Kraus: Wir haben nichts extrem Spezielles erlebt. Ich glaube es ist normal das Touristen sich dort beispielsweise öfters im Sand festfahren oder mit Kakerlaken klar kommen müssen. Eine lustige Situation gab es als unser Mitreisender Andi sein Geschäft in der Wüste erledigen musste. Wir waren am Strand und wollten gerade windsurfen gehen als er mit unserem SUV durch ein Überschwemmungsgebiet fuhr und sich komplett fest fuhr. Wir haben dann aus vielen einzelnen alten Fischerseilen ein großes Seil zusammengeknotet und es irgendwann geschafft das Auto da heraus zu ziehen.
