With mast plus sets rolling into the point of Pacasmayo it was the most incredible day of port tack competition in the history of the American Windsurfing Tour. Bernd Roediger, Kevin Pritchard, Morgan Noireaux and Levi Siver will face each other in the semi final heat and fight for the places on the men’s podium.
We got some statements about the event and the conditions from Levi, Kevin, Morgan and Bernd.
LEVI SIVER
Yesterday was an experience I never forget. We sailed mast high waves that seemed to last minutes each ride. Best port tack sailing I’ve ever had hands down. My last wave was a bomb all the way out from the light house to the camp my arms and legs finally gave out after a full day marathon of endless turns and I remember just standing there in the flats still watching this wave peeling perfectly like a machine. I’m in total disbelief that this place isn’t a popular destination for windsurfing.
KEVIN PRITCHARD
The conditions have been unreal. I had three sessions, some of the best port tack of my life. It is just incredible. For sure the longest port tack wave I have ever sailed. I was using my 93 liter board and 5.4 Taka and if you can get your hands on a three batten sail for here, it works phenomenally. One board and sail the whole time. One thing I love about here is that it is almost all pure wave riding. It is side off shore, light but perfect butter smooth waves. I know Bernd has been doing some tricks on the wave but for the most part it is pretty much pure wave riding. I like that.
I know the judges like Levi and Morgan’s style a lot so they will be tough to beat. If I could get some of the waves I rode yesterday, and get them in my heat and ride them like I felt like I was from the point to the camp, I would love to think I would be right in there. I definitely had some fun on the water sailing till dark. And the girls are really ripping here with Fiona, Ingrid and Carolina. The three of them are going to be hard to decide from. Carolina has improved so much since I saw here sail two years ago here, and really goes for it. She looks right at home and if she can put it all together with some big wave rides we might just see a Peruvian winner. Ingrid is always tough to beat. She is solid, consistent, knows how to compete, so we will see.
MORGAN NOIREAUX
You can never underestimate how good Pacasmayo can get. Last year when I came I got some amazing conditions but I knew it could get even better. Then yesterday I had the best day I’ve ever had port tack, and I know that it has the potential for even more. It’s just a perfect place for sailing as was displayed yesterday during the competition. You would think that it’s not everyday that you get mast high waves with side offshore winds and anywhere from ten to twenty turns. But from what I’ve seen in Peru is pretty common. I’m really happy to be in the top four. Pacasmayo is where I learned to sail port tack, and the reason I’ve managed to progress so quickly so I’d be super stoked to win here.
BERND ROEDIGER
Well I had pretty low expectations for this event, or at least I felt little pressure to succeed since last year some wacko dude came and stole my harness, right off my rig, just before my heat! I didn’t make my heat but I got a gorgeous pump on my tri’s… Totally worth it. So basically, if I could hold on to my harness past Round 3, I would have improved on last year’s performance! Then to make it all the way to the top 4 is like a massive improvement, upset of the year maybe!
In all seriousness though, congrats to Levi, Morgan, and Kevin for making it all the way, can’t wait to share a few sets with you guys out there! It should be a good time, just to be able to ride one of the longest left handers on planet Earth, this 2000 meter point break, sculpted by the gods. It’s like a solid “4” on my “Cool Waves to Windsurf” list.
Huge mahalos to the folks who are really making this event happen! Jaime Rojas, for welcoming us all back to the El Faro hotel right out in front of this sick wave. Head Judge, Chris Freeman, and the great panel of judges! And Carolina Butrich, for coordinating logistics with everyone and getting us all here safely!
i think the awt is a sick tour!!
they try to score the best conditions for windsurfing instead of an all tour with onshore wind and crappy waves, except for ho’okipa.
so… why do you guys complain??
would love to be there btw, conditions looks incredible…
Let’s go …they are all of them such a great athletes!!
but …..but …..
speaking about something over the technicalities
it is only a mater of intensity and emotions
people like Levi and Polakow ( just to mention two of the most representative)
express the deepest essence of windsurfing….and moreover the art of radikal sports
this is a fact but no one would be able to explain this concept to someone who doesn’t feel this spirit
alhoa!

but also important i think to find new legends of windsurfing so the sport does not stay becoming too old. what is the best way for doing this? films? competitions?
Once and for all the yankee boys should wake up and come to know that windsurfing is not only about twisting your ass on a windless wave. Where are there top 10 (or top 20 ) PWA wave competitors ? Graham Ezzy at least tried to do something but got smoked away by the canarians at Pozo. The last greats were Josh A. and K. Pritchard but that was way sometime ago. Recently I heard that Philip Koester’s style was heavily critizised- on Maui- this is nothing more than pure envy. Koester can perform decently at Hookipa, but I am… Read more »
Koster isnot just some canarian and very almost heat even then.
They are just doing the AWT. Their previous stop was pistol river, not windless to me…
Koster is every year in Maui/Australia, Levi doesn’t bother going to pozo obviously. Why would you if you live on maui?
Windsurfing is not only competition. Just let them do what they like.
Splash, What do you have to say about the # of yankee boys on this list? Was this event windless? come on… those comment’s don’t say shit about the wind or really the wave…
good great are not telling us if the wind is onshore off shore or
the wave is reef sand punchy or soft????
I can tell, i sail here since 1996! You hace waves all The year, but most frequently big swells april to october. More height, longer The waves. No Reef, just rocky and Sand mixed at The bottom. Very safe. Wave height goes from 3 – 17 feet but mostly 5-8. Wave is friendly. Lip is small and have los force, you can risk and will feel safe if you end in The White Water. Is not a tubular Wave, slow in some sections and faster in some others so you can reacomodate if needed. Can be 100m lenght in a… Read more »
I agree, doesn’t look very good to me…they can say everything but those waves doesn’ push to much.
