The PWA World Cup on Sylt saw a lot of stunning action during the event period (28th of September – 7th of October 2012). The wind never stopped and gave the race crew a lot of work. On the final day a Slalom elimination was scheduled, but could not be started due to a too rough North Sea. The boats were not able to make it through the heavy shore break and the slalom sailors got released early. In the end only two rounds of Slalom got finished. The freestyle sailors had already finished a double elimination and got released, too.

WAVE FINAL

The PWA decided to run the final heats of the double elimination. In 25 to 30 knots cross onshore wind with heavy 2-3 meter messy waves it looked, as if the Spaniard Alex Mussolini is unstoppable. He defeated Ricardo Campello, who had a hard time to find suitable ramps for jumps and waves for rides. After realizing to be on the podium, the first thing Alex Mussolini did was hugging his pregnant wife. His teammates Thomas Traversa and Cedric Bordes and one of his sponsors Robert Sand were on the beach to give the necessary support!

Alex continued to sail strong and sent Victor Fernandez back to the beach. Victor started his heat “ok”, but got problems with his injured ankle from the Night Session.

In the final heat a fully warmed up Alex met Philip Köster. Well powered on a 92 liter big waveboard and a 5,0 m sail, Philip made the conditions look so easy. He nailed a nice double Forward, a Backloop on port tack and a stalled Forward on starboard tack. Additionally he showed several waverides and he even tried Clew first Aerials in these heavy, white water rollers. Several hundred kilogramms of water, even tons sucked the sand from the ground and crashed next to the beach, where thousands of spectators were lined up to cheer for their new windsurfing super star Philip Köster. It´s a new era in windsurfing with a new darling of the public. Had Naish and Dunkerbeck seen better days at Sylt?

Alex for sure could have been an opponent on a par with Philip with his super stylish style. But not this day as he injured his leg during a landing in the final. Philip won the heat and for the very first time the event on Sylt. When he returned back to the beach hundreds of frenetic fans welcomed their hero and it took a while for Philip to return to the riders area. The Köstermania was full on!

LADIES FINAL

Not many people kept on watching the ladies final in between Daida and Iballa Moreno. Daida first won against Swiss Laure Treboux, who was able to defeat Karin Jaggi for the second time. In the run against her twin sister, Daida started excellent and all looked like we could see a super final, but in the last minute Iballa nailed a perfect Backloop and won the event. It was her third victory in a row in this season and she crowned herself as the new wave worldchampion. But biggest respect to Daida for being a strong opponent, after being diagnosed with cancer just one year ago. Laure Treboux finished the event in third, but Karin Jaggi managed to make it on the podium in 3rd overall!
