Sarah-Quita Offringa dominated the final day at Alacati as well and took the this year´s victory at the Turkish windsurfing Mecca. Antoine Albeau dominated the men´s fleet and won in front of a strong sailing Ben van der Steen and Björn Dunkerbeck. Valerie Arrighetti won the PWA Slalom 2012 Overall title in front of Karin Jaggi and Lena Erdil.

The final day

The plan for the final day was to run one last elimination. In the men´s fleet the first and second place were already decided. Antoine Albeau had a clear lead in front of Ben van der Steen, who could not lose his second place anymore. Björn Dunkerbeck still had to defend his third place against a very strong sailing Ross Williams.

In the beginning of the day the wind was very inconsistent and patchy, which caused a lot of premature starts. In addition to that and because of the weekend, a lot of big motor boats and yachts left the harbour and headed directly into the racecourse. This fact gave the race crew an extremely hard time, as they had to push the boats up and guide them around the course.

Also in the last winners final of the men three sailors went over early and just five sailors were left to fight for the victory in the last elimination. It was big fight in beteween Josh Angulo and Björn Dunkerbeck, who both seemed to have the same speed. Josh managed to make a better start and came out first after the first mark and kept the lead until the end. Congrats to Josh for claiming the first bullet of the year.

But Antoine Albeau dominated the event at Alacati with winning 6 out of 9 eliminations. Only once he made a mistake and missed to qualify through the first round. It was definitely a big show of the Frenchmen, who, with this victory, made the 2012 overall slalom title run exciting again. Always fighting for the top spot was the Dutch Ben van der Steen. No matter how he started he always fought back and made it 7 times into the winners final. He told us, for claiming the victory in Alacati, he missed to do perfect starts.

The ladies fleet

Sarah-Quita dominated the event with 5 victories out of 9 eliminations. After a realatively slow start in the beginning of the week, she found her form and simply dominated the event. Always on her heels was Valerie Arrighetti, who made it in second and won one elimination. Although Karin Jaggi managed to win two eliminations at Alacati, she only became third. She missed three times to qualify for the winners final and got too high points.

2012 PWA Slalom Overall Title

The event in Alacati was the final event for the slalom women. Therefore the overall title has been awarded. After three events, Karin Jaggi and Valerie Arrighetti had the same points. Each had one victory, one second and one third place. In case this happens, the result of the final event counts more and so, Valerie Arrighetti got the 2012 PWA Slalom Champion title. Lena Erdil from Bodrum (Turkey) completes the podium in the overall ranking. Big congratulations! With a second place at Reggio di Calabria (Italy), an eighth in South Korea and a fourth in Alacati, Lena collected enough points to stay ahead of Delphine Cousin and Cagla Kubat.

2012 PWA Slalom Champions

Sarah-Quita Offringa has just competed in Alacati due to the fact she concentrates on her studies at the moment. She is not sure, if she will have more time to compete in 2013 on the PWA Slalom circuit, but everybody witnessed the amazing speed of Sarah-Quita and the big distance to her contenders.

In general the level in the ladies Slalom fleet got raised and there are around 12 excellent sailing girls on tour. We as well would like to mention Arrianne Aukes. The Dutch freestyle lady did her first Slalom race and finished on place 16. Her sailing improved during the contest and if Arrianne keeps on training she will soon be in the top 10. Arrianne: “It would be cool to compete at places, where we will have a freestyle competition as well!” Perhaps we will see the underdog top ranked soon.
