The Sustainable Living Institute of Maui (SLIM), Positive H2O and Surfrider Foundation have teamed up with award winning filmmaker Danny Miller to produce the new documentary, CHANGING TIDES. This 15 minute film will bring the issue of oceanic garbage into the public dialogue, where ideas are formed and solutions proposed.
The engaging story is told through the eyes of Hawaiian kapuna and professional surfers and windsurfers, scientist and volunteers who share their passion for the ocean and what they are doing to protect it. Their stories bring us an in-depth look at oceanic garbage in the Pacific, and what it means for residents of Hawai’i and other Pacific islands impacted by the waste. CHANGING TIDES dispels the myths and demonstrates the real dangers of the Northern Pacific Garbage Patch this is nearly twice the size of Texas and looming off Hawaii’s shores. Hawai’i is uniquely poised to tell the story of the floating trash. It is the most remote land mass on Earth, the land mass closest to the North Pacific Gyre, and the first land mass to start seeing the effects of the world’s debris.

“An estimated 26 millions tons of plastic end up in the ocean each year. And big names like Micah Buzianis or Björn Dunkerbeck were victims of the trash in the ocean. Micah had a massive catapult breaking his gear in Reggio at the PWA as he crashed something while a race. Björn tried to get a plastic bag of his fin at the Slalom in South Korea and cut his foot as he had to double-stichted in the hospital later.”
Jake Miller from +H2O: “I wanted to let you know that +H2O along with Surfrider Foundation and the Sustainable Living Institute of Maui have finished producing a film on Marine Debris and plastic. Founding members Levi Siver, Keith Teboul, Pascal Bronnimann and Jake Miller all star in this film directed by award winning director Danny Miller. Its a short 15 min film and was just recently selected out of 1000 film submissions for the 2012 Maui Film Festival. It will be shown on June 16th at 4pm and there will also be a +H2O/Surfrider Beach Clean Up that day at 9am. Positive H2O is also accepting applications for ambassadors and team riders that would like to be pro-active in their community and the world.
