Keep Windsurfing as Olympic Discipline – Video

on 23. May, 2012 – 00:38 / 2 Comments

Justin Denel, one of the young French talents in the waves – he had won the youth wave world title in Peru in 2011 – asked several windsurfers at the Defi Wind event 2012 on their opinion about the Olympic solution. The ISAF recently announced that Windsurfing will not be a discipline in 2016 at Rio, Brazil anymore. The RS:X windsurfing class should be replaced by a Kitesurfing class from 2016 on. Watch the following clip and get some opinions of big names in the windsurfing sport like Anders Bringdal. If you are interested in more infos on this topic, read following article.

Björn Dunkerbeck recently released following statement about the current development:

“Windsurfing has been an Olympic Discipline since 1984. 10.000 of windsurfers have been sailing this class over the years. I don’t see any reason the KITING has to take Windsurfing´s place. Windsurfing is sailing and kiting is not even sailing, it´s Kiting !!! Best of luck keeping windsurfing in the Olympics!” (Björn Dunkerbeck while the PWA World Cup 2012 in South Korea)

why does everybody want to bring this back to the olympics? i think it’s not even windsurfing, as i can’t imagine having fun on a 234767834738kg board in 3 knots?!?! nobody is interested in this, because it’s boring. or can anyone of us windsurfers name a few rs:x gold medalists? windsurfing is fun&radical, and thats the way the world should think about our sport. this rs:x stuff just makes our image even worse…
