Kurosh Kiani reports from Maui

on 19. April, 2010 – 00:21 / No Comment

Danish slalom sailor Kurosh Kiani sent us his next update from Maui, where he stays in the moment to train and prepare as good as possible for the first PWA tourstop in South Korea in the mid of May 2010.

“Thought it would be time to give you guys an update on the good life over here on Maui. I can just say that since my last update, I have not stopped sailing. Actually the last 10 days I have been sailing almost exclusively on my 5,5 and 6,2 Simmer SCR´s and my Small Angulo Magnum 62.”

A typical week here in Maui goes by mostly slalom sailing for me, and of course some wave action, whenever I get the chance. For me personally wavesailing helps a lot on my slalom sailing. So I try to get a good mix of both.

The training life over here on Maui is very good. You get to spend a lot of time on the water with fast guys that keep you on the pace constantly.

A few weeks have passed by since I landed on this great island and things have been moving on since then. Basically it has all been mainly highwind training, which I really like, as I mostly sail in lighter winds in Denmark.
In the meanwhile I got used to all my new gear, which took a bit of time as I had all new, sails and boards. But now I am comfortable on my gear. Now the attention has been turned more onto jibing.

We manage to put bouys out ourselves here, which is a big thing as we  can set up a course within a few minutes. We can put a small course, big course, startlines etc. Basically anything to reflect the real life racing situation instead of just blasting miles out and coming back, which can be good for other things but not for Slalom sailing.
The good thing about the jibe practice is that it really gets your heartrate up, and that you actually feel like you are doing something that is hard work, and you are moving you body around a lot.

Our bouyees consist of two big green kids balls to bounce on, a short piece of rope and a small anchor or a 5kg weight. Its that simple, and it helps you a lot. So I would recommend that to any guys racing out there. It really brings out the fun in slalom racing your freinds.

I am spending time with a lot of good guys over here who can push you to the limit, which I find really good as it might give a bit better preparation for the upcoming races this season.

I know that many other sailors have chosen different locations than Maui for training, but having stayed over here about a month was a good decision. I definitely know that it would be hard to find another place, which will beat the amount of time, that I spend on the water here on Maui and what a guy like me needs. For me time on the water is the key, which makes me happy and that´s the reason, why  I have chosen this location.

Now there is short time until the first PWA slalom worldcup of the year in South Korea will be on. So hopefully we can get out there on teh ocean and do some more racing before the season kicks off.

Aloha from Maui,

Kurosh Kiani (D-19)
