Kaino Kai Lenny

Kai Lenny , the young Hawaiian waterman, comes up with a great Kono variation and calls it Kaino. What do you think, is it a new move or should it just be called Wave Kono?

I think we have seen it in the past by Robby Naish!
vom robby naish hab ich den noch nie gesehen! die 360er hat sich der kay lenny eindeutig von robby naish abgeschaut, aber der robby naish verabschiedet sich dann meistens über die welle drüber! hat er auf sylt z.b. ein paar mal gezeigt.
Right! aber echt richtig geiler move! und dann von so nem super jungen nachwuchssurfer!

Why not Kaino?
Think of all the moves that are pretty similar but given different names: Goiter/Ponch. Flaka/Taka… What did Ricardo call his Grubby on the wave? A ‘campello’?
This is no different.
Props to Kai for taking a cool move into the waves – he deserves to be able to name it!

Kaino because in the Kono you go and finish on the oposite way … there he’s finishing with a slide backward and make an half turn more in the wave (like end of spock 540 …

Stylish move! No problem with naming it the Kaino.
The first ‘kono switch’ movie from Kiri Thode also included this sliding trough (http://www.continentseven.de/windsurfmove1322.html) so that part in my opinion is not new ( I’d rather say that what most riders do and call a ‘switch kono’ in fact is a ‘semi-switch kono’). On could also argue that Kai Lenny’s version is Wymaroo with a slide built in afterwards (as he jibes into the switchstance backwind position)(or vice versa the semi-switch kono most riders are doing is a sort of twisted Wymaroo, but you arrive at the position for jumping not by jibing into it); If you will I think the pro’s can also do this Kaino on flat water, the only difference with the ‘original’ switch kono from Kiri would then be the way you get into the ‘starting position’. (for comparison: you can also ‘jibe’ into the position for a clew first puneta or you can sail switch stance than duck the sail and do your CF puneta)

I thought that was meant to be the same in the Kono as well…
Its just that its difficult to turn 360 in Kono so most people just end it 180 in the opposite way. I may be wrong.

This move is a normal kono just on a different surface. I think it is easier to go down a flat wave in hookipa (the wave push you and support the sliding) then doing it on chop in fuerte.
The name is pretty stupid. Either he thinks he inveted something new… then he should have a completly “new” name and not conect it to the word “kono” or he just reliese that the move he does is a move that already exist since 2 years and call it “kono in waves”.
Other then that i believe Kai is a good rider ike all the other 60 out there in Hookipa.

SIck move Kai. First of all, a Kono is a downwind 360 for all the people who dont know that, a Kaino is a downwind 540 on a wave. Kai Lenny will be the best windsurfer in the world very soon. Nice one Kai
A switch Kono is definetly no downwind 360! You get into the initial position by changing footposition to switch and by ducking under the sail. Out of this position you jump an upwind(!) 360 (or 180 in the switch semi Kono).
But as we see now it is also possible to get into the same starting position by doing half a 360 first (which is imho much easier).
Due to different initiation of both moves it´s a good idea to use different names. Kaino is a very good solution but we should use the name also when doing this move on flat water.

Der Move ist doch ganz klar Robby Naish – Signature Move! Nicht Kai Lenny’s – Kai ist wirklich sehr tallentiert und ich habe eine menge respekt gegenüber seiner Leistungen allerdings geht der Move für mich auf Robbys Konto!
Der Name passt trotzdem sehr gut da er ja in der Welle gesprungen wird.

You can see Robby doing ‘Kaino’:) yet without switching the direction at the end. It was much before Kiri “invented” the Kono
